Rekha Shankar is a story editor for NBC’s Grand Crew, and staff writer for Hulu’s Animaniacs. She was also the Head Writer/performer for CollegeHumor’s Hardly Working series. In 2020 she was selected for Just For Laughs: New Faces – Creators. She is an improviser at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre LA and improvised for UCBT NY’s Harold Night and UCB’s Touring Company.


This class meets once and does not have a class show.

Sometimes sketches can just be two people talking. And that’s fine, but why are we watching it instead of listening to it, then? A good sketch has funny dialogue, but a great sketch has funny dialogue AND visuals that contribute to the game. So let’s learn how to master both!
By the time you leave this class, you’ll understand better how to pitch, how to refine a pitch, and how to turn that idea into a short sketch that utilizes visuals to enhance the joke.
NOTE: If you are interested in writing a sketch and having it read, prepare TWO PITCHES MAXIMUM for the class. We will do our best to go through all of them time permitting, and assign you one of them. Then, after the class, you’ll have a week to write up that sketch and send it to me, and then I’ll give you notes sometime in the following couple weeks.

Refund Policy

  • The Ruby LA has a no-refund policy on all classes and shows. If we need to cancel or re-schedule a class for any reason, you are entitled to take that class or classes equal to the admission price of that class. You may use your class credit for up to two years, after which time it expires.
  • The Ruby LA reserves the right to replace a course instructor, without notice, and at any time, with another equally qualified course instructor.
  • The Ruby LA also reserves the right to postpone or cancel a course if an emergency or unforeseen conflict arises. In the event of a complete cancellation, students’ tuition will be refunded or credited. Any fees incurred by students for travel, lodging, etc. will not be reimbursed by the Ruby LA.
