New Classes at our New DTLA Location!

new classesWhile we were away, we weren’t just snoozing and hammering. We were also changing the entire scope of our improv and sketch programs and making new classes. People often ask us “what’s your thing, is it game, is it characters, is it being cool?” And yes to the third one. It is being cool. But also…

What we do at The Ruby LA is teach you all of the tools to create. Our new programs emphasize four key components: Confidence, Environment, Awareness, and Shaping Your Ideas. In each of our classes you’ll work on characters, heightening, and the mechanics of developing good improv and sketch. But all of this knowledge is used to empower you to create the art and comedy YOU are meant to create.

We’ll still be offering The Whole Gem for those folx who’ve completed programs at other institutions, have no fear. That class will be posted in the upcoming months and will be great for anyone who needs a brush up on those mechanics! Until then, pop into our Level 1 Sketch and Improv classes and strengthen your unique voice. Because at The Ruby LA, we believe: You’re A Gem!

Open House at the New Ruby LA!

open houseHi! Tomorrow we have our open house! We’re going to make some crafts, show you our new stage, and murals, and green room, and class room! We’ve been very hard at work (literally this our 10th day in a row at the space plz send a masseuse and a bunch of chocolates). We’re exhausted. But we’re also so so excited for you to see what we’ve been working on. So come out! Make some crafts! Have some chips! And give us your best heating pad recommendations.
See you tomorrow!

We’ve Been Painting!

paintingIt’s been a little bit since our last post. We’ve been chugging along getting walls built and painting at our new Downtown LA location, and things like newsletters and regular life have gone by the wayside. But we’ve got our very first class happening THIS SUNDAY. And we had to let you know all about it! Anyway, enough about us, how are YOU doing???

Goodbye Sunset!

goodbye sunsetWell we’re finally here, our last weekend at 7518 Sunset Blvd. Moving is bittersweet. Speaking of which…want to help us move?? Sign up here.

We’ve lived in this place as The Ruby LA for over a year and a half. And in the Nerdist School days, since 2014. That’s a long time.

The original space was a backroom that Meltdown Comics didn’t use but for storage, and it was all painted white. The green room used to have a piano in it. The front window had a weird Chris Hardwick cutout. The stage has been orientated in at least four different ways. The bathroom faucet has NEVER had hot water, though I try every single time. Nicole Villela and Zach Tabacco were our first interns. There’s rumors that the TMNT mural in the back is done by the actual artist for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Tom one time found $50 in the electric panel, because this was a system for paying people back at one point. Before Venmo. Don’t look for any money there now, that system has long since been abandoned. See: Venmo.

As we leave this space, we are excited for what awaits us. But the quirks, interesting smells, and the 3000 sunglasses from comic-con in our Sunset home will be greatly missed. At 7518 Sunset Blvd, we’ve made best friends and new family, watched hilarious shows, and bid sad farewells. And we’ll do it all again one more time this Sunday evening. So join us, as we say goodbye to Sunset. All of our improv teams will perform, with maybe some special guests. We’ll eat pizza, share memories, and say goodbye to an old space. And hello to our new adventure.

We Got a New Space!

new spaceWell we can finally tell you our big news! Yesterday we got the keys to the new space! The Ruby LA is moving to the fashion district in DTLA! ??????

Next week will be our last weekly newsletter for a minute while we get everything prepped for our big opening in (hopefully) January. We’ll post all of our progress over on Instagram, so make sure you’re following us there to get lots of super cute #beforeandafter shots.

Thank you for all of your support and for being such an incredible community of human beings! We are so excited for these big changes! ❤️❤️❤️
