Instructor: Laura House

Our Pilot Writing Level 1 is a class to help navigate the intimidating world of TV pilots! Especially performers who want to create roles for themselves. Where do we start? How do you take the way you’re funny and put it into a show? How do you create characters and story that highlight your talents? I’ll show you. Simple exercises will help you create your role, a show concept, supporting characters, and stories. From there, you’ll write your outline and pilot. This class also works for writers who simply want to write their (first/next) script. You’ll learn simple techniques that you can use again and again. The hardest part of writing is the work you put in before you actually start writing, but with the right tools, it can be a whole lot easier! Students can plan to leave this class with at least a rough draft of their script.

This class is 8 weeks long and does not have a class show.

Laura House has written on the Emmy-winning shows Mom and Samantha Who?, the BAFTA-winning Secret Life of Boys and others, including Mtv’s Loosely, Exactly, Nicole, The George Lopez Show and more. She’s sold and developed five network pilots at ABC, FX, Mtv and Nickelodeon. Her first job in showbiz was co-creating and starring in Mtv’s cult-favorite, Austin Stories. This came after performing stand-up for just one year. Laura is a headlining comedian who has performed on HBO, Comedy Central, NBC and more. She contributes to Broadly and Vice and her personal essays are published in four books, including True Tales of Lust and Love and Comedy Film Nerds Guide to the Movies. She created the hit fringe solo show “How to Hate Yourself,” which Huffpo called “a riotous laughfest and a complete joy.” It continues monthly with other comedians at the Hollywood Improv Lab to sold-out crowds.
