We’ve Got Online Classes!

online classesWow. Wow. Wow. What a crazy 48 hours it’s been. Things are getting cancelled left and right. And with good cause. We want everyone to be safe and feel safe. That’s why we made The Ruby LA!

But staying inside for the next few weeks is going to be a SNOOZEFEST. So we took our writing classes and put them all online. AND we’ve got more classes coming! Yes! And panels, workshops, the whole nine.

AND while we’re not selling tickets to shows, we’re going to get creative and figure out a way to stream content so you can watch us be idiots from the safety of your own living room. We’ll post more about that soon. Until then check out these sweet online classes! Wash your hands (doy) and make sure you subscribe to our Youtube channel so you can get those streams bb!

Laura House Talks TV

Laura House has written on the Emmy-winning shows Mom and Samantha Who?, the BAFTA-winning Secret Life of Boys. She’s written for Mtv’s Loosely, Exactly, Nicole, The George Lopez Show, and she’s sold and developed five (FIVE!) network pilots at ABC, FX, MTV and Nickelodeon. laura houseWowoweee! That’s a lot of awesome tv credits! So of course today, we’re talking with her about TV!

Which comedian has created the best autobiographical tv show?

Issa Rae with Insecure. For one, she made a compelling web series for herself. And it attracted huge talent like Larry Wilmore and landed on HBO. Also, she tells funny, relatable stories with BIG DEEP HEART! AND it’s about being awkward and insecure, stuff we generally avoid owning. SO IMPRESSIVE!

What’s your favorite new show this year?

Kinda new, I love Atypical, Ozark & Glow. New-new: BARRY

What’s the best Halloween episode of any tv show ever?

Roseanne’s “Boo.” The Conners are SO INTO HALLOWEEN & I wasn’t & it made me love the ‘ween. Wait, what?

Thanks Laura!

Desk Piece with Nelinda Palomino

Nelinda Palomino is teaching our newest intro to sketch class and we had to get the scoop on her writing set up.

nelinda palomino

What thing do you have to have to start writing / working?

A cup of coffee.

What’s your favorite thing in your desk area and why?

This might sound dorky but my keyboard tray. I couldn’t find a desk that would fit my small apartment, so I found this amazing Ikea hack for a computer cabinet. It was perfect because it hid my computer from being seen through my huge windows. I made the sliding pull out tray all by myself and I’m pretty proud of it.

What was the name of the very first sketch you ever wrote and what was it about?

The name of my very first sketch I ever wrote was called Drug Dealer Friend. It was about a drug dealer who sold pills that gave you very specific abilities. Like if you took the yellow pill you will be able to insert a USB cable right every single time. Or if you took a mauve one it gave you the ability to correctly do your taxes and get, like an insane refund.
